Presenter
Jeremy Comfort, Director and founding partner of York Associates
Length and dates
3 days, 20-22 October 2008
Proposed Cost
£700 or €882 (Please check directly with the provider)
Over the last ten years York Associates has developed its own original approach to developing managers who lead people internationally and in 2007 began to accredit trainers to use this resource. The objectives of the Developing People Internationally (DPI) programme are to help people working internationally to:
- understand culture and its impact on behaviour in international teams;
- understand themselves and other members of their team;
- develop communication strategies and skills to get the best out of international teams.
The training package consists of nine critical incidents in the life of an international project team:
- Getting to know the team – building rapport and understanding
- Direction – working to common goals
- Organisation – structuring team work
- Roles – expectations of individual team members
- Coaching – developing individual team members
- Feedback – motivating and inspiring team members
- Representing – managing the interface between the team and the outside
- Conflict – handling conflict between team members
- Cooperation – working together.
Once trainers have received accreditation by following the three-day DPI programme, they gain access to the package of training materials and are invited to join the network of DPI trainers worldwide.

Success in today’s environments requires people who are able to share information, make decisions, coordinate activities and resolve conflict across multiple cultures—people who harvest the assets of diversity, rather than see differences as something to avoid or minimise. Whether we work domestically or internationally, intercultural competence is a requisite. This course, in its content, process, and outcomes, promotes human and cultural richness, social justice, and the relationships of culture, curriculum and practice that can be used for ecological sustainability.
In this course participants will deepen their understanding of key intercultural concepts and their ability to apply those concepts for individual and organizational development. Students will demonstrate ability to use the Cultural Detective Method and materials effectively and flexibly in multiple contexts, including individual coaching, multicultural team effectiveness, and workshop design and facilitation. Exploration of cultural values and ways of navigating differences will encourage participants to challenge their assumptions of cultural self and cultural other.
Participants will learn strategies for developing and facilitating development of three intercultural capacities:
- Knowing self (structured reflection and dialogue),
- Understanding others (observation and description, affirmative inquiry, dialogue), and
- Bridging cultures (polarity management, dilemma reconciliation, solution creation).
They will experience the link between behavior and values/intent in multiple scenarios, and understand the importance of context and process in intercultural interaction.
The tools and methods participants learn in this course will enable them to better translate complex intercultural concepts into everyday practice. They will gain fluency with a method of planning and debriefing cross-cultural experience that does not blame but creates new paths forward. They will learn to combine multiple intercultural theories, tools and methods (including the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory, and Trompenaars’ and Hofstede’s dimensions of culture) with Cultural Detective to maximize learning and effectiveness. Significant attention during this two-day course is given to multiplicity of practical applications of the tool as well as to facilitation techniques and design. Demonstration of the Cultural Detective basic model on the first morning will focus either on Russian or Egyptian culture.
In addition to the professional development benefits, Certified Facilitators for Cultural Detective are able to purchase this tool at a discount rate, are listed as certified facilitators on the Cultural Detective website, and have access to on-going professional development opportunities offered to the Cultural Detective certified facilitator team.
Prerequisites
Participants should read the Cultural Detective Series Guide and Participant Manual prior to taking the course. Both will be emailed to them upon their registration for this Certification course. They should reflect on their personal core values and the influences of their various cultural experiences.
